Gareth Mann is the Director of Panthera’s Leopard program and is based in Cape Town, South Africa. Gareth completed his undergraduate and Masters degrees at the University of Cape Town, but first started working on leopards in 2009 when he began his PhD research, a study of a low-density leopard population in the semi-arid mountains of the Little Karoo, South Africa. Gareth completed his PhD through Rhodes University in 2014, and joined Panthera the following year. Gareth’s work with Panthera has involved overseeing and expanding Panthera’s leopard population monitoring program in Southern Africa, and being Panthera’s coordinator on the Arabian Leopard Initiative, which aims to restore and conserve Arabian leopards in Saudi Arabia. Gareth’s passion is producing applied research that can guide conservation policy and management, and linking field research to conservation outcomes.
