Upaya Penyelamatan Satwa Liar Indonesia melalui Konservasi Harimau Sumatera (_Panthera tigris sumatrae_)
2002  Full Book

In the last three decades, tigers have attracted international attention. The existence of these amazing animals in the wild has reached the most critical levels. Three of the eight subspecies that ever existed have been reported lost from the face of the earth. The three subspecies are the Caspian tiger (_Panthera tigris virgata_), Javan tiger (_Panthera tigris sondaica_) and the Bali tiger (_Panthera tigris balica_). The extinction of these was caused by human actions auch as poaching, habitat destruction and trade. The remaining five subspecies will suffer the same fate if no conservation efforts are taken. In 1975 the tiger became listed in Appendix 1 of CITES, which prohibits international trade. The tiger is also listed in the IUCN Red List of endangered animals. On the basis of the above then came the various responses of the parties concerned in the effort to preserve the species and prevent its extinction. An example is the release of a law within the framework of conservation strategies which prohibits the destruction of habitat in every country that has a native tiger species. The Indonesian response came only after two of the three subspecies in Indonesia have been declared extinct. After the extinction of the Bali tiger around 1940 and the Java tiger in the late 1970s, the Sumatran tiger (_Panthera tigris sumatrae_) is the last subspecies remaining in Indonesia. The Sumatra tiger conservation strategy was developed in order to support the wildlife conservation program. Its main objectives are to develop and ensure the survival of wild Sumatran tigers in the long term in Indonesia. The strategy is divided into two components: _in situ_ and _ex situ_. The _in situ_ components include the protection of the wild Sumatran tiger jpopulation (in the wild) coupled with the development strategy. _Ex situ_ components include the development of the population of Sumatra tigers in captivity and consider diseases and the genetic purity in efforts to restore the integrity of wild populations. The performed actions are a gleam of hope in the effort to save the Sumatran tigers. However, the situation still needs to be improved and the awareness of the whole society for the plight of the Sumatran tiger needs to be risen.
