Sand cat _Felis margarita_
2010  Full Book

In the present issue of the studbook of the sand cat I summarised the data of 2008 (chapter 2) and 2009 (chapter 3). Please pay attention to the studbook numbers and substitute the temporary by the now available permanent numbers in your ARKS data. In some cases the temporary numbers are mentioned in brackets. In 2009 Anne Hanschke, Jennifer Ringleb and Martin Denhard from the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Berlin finished a research study concerning non-invasive reproductive hormone monitoring in female sand cats and summarized the results for this Studbook (see chapter 4). Thank you very much for providing information and for sharing your knowledge. In chapter 5 you find some information concerning the field study "Ecology and conservation of Saharan carnivores" in Niger (Termit/Tin Toumma) initiated by the Sahara Conservation Fund (SCF). One of the intentions of the project is to improve the understanding of sympatric Saharan carnivores (amongst others the sand cat) by determining their distribution and abundance, fundamental ecology and community-level interactions. During the Canid TAG meeting in Copenhagen (2009) and the Felid TAG Meeting in Verona (2010) information was already distributed and EEP participants were asked for support. Up to now Amn‚ville Zoo and Osnabrck Zoo as sand cat keeping institution have supported the project. More supporting institutions are very welcome. I plan to publish the Studbook 2010 in beginning of 2011, but would like to inform you already at this point about news in 2010. Julia Stagegaard (Ebeltoft Zoo) acts beside Sharon Redrobe as veterinary advisor for the Sand cat EEP. Thank you very much both for this support. Moreover we have a remarkable change in the breeding situation. In 2008, 2009 and 2010 the number of births increased and consequently there are some surplus sand cats and new holders are urgently needed. To avoid further surplus animals it is recommended to avoid breeding at the moment and to establish single sex groups. More information and analysis follow with the next issue of the studbook.
