Arthropod-borne infections in lions _(Panthera leo)_ from the Fasano Safari Park
2006  Conference Proceeding

The infective state for Rickettsia spp, Coxiella burnetii, Anaplasma phagocytophilum ,Ehrlichia canis, Theileria spp., Babesia spp. and Leishmania infantum in a group of 8 young adult lionesses living in the Fasano safari park was investigated by serology (IFAT) and/or biomolecular techniques. Conventional PCR and RLB hybridization technique were performed on blood, lymph node aspirate and skin biopsy. Clinical evaluation was done by physical examination, CBC, urinalysis and serum protein electrophoresis. Leukocyte positivity detected in 5 out of 6 urinary samples by a test strip was not confirmed by microscopic examination. Two animals had a positive serology and/or PCR for C. burnetii ; three lionesses had a positive RLB hybridization test for T. lestoquardi, but DNA sequencing has to confirm this result.
