Recent situation of the old world wildcat _Felis silvestris_ Schreber, 1777 and Eurasian lynx _Lynx lynx_, Linnaeus, 1758, in the Apennines
2008  Conference Proceeding

The primary scientific information needed for the preservation of a wild species is the knowledge, given as precisely as possible, of its range, in a significant geographical area (BAILLIE et alii, 2004). In the case of the European wildcat and Eurasian lynx, in Italy such an area could be represented by the Apennine Region, which is hypothetically large and ecologically homogeneous enough to be considered as supporting a main population (ZIMMERMANN et alii, 2003; RAGNI, 2006). The ridge of the Apennines can be considered the "backbone" of the Italian Peninsula (Map. 1) crossing all twelve peninsular regions, from the northernmost Liguria to the southernmost Calabria.
