Mammalian Reintroduction Survey. General Summary Report
2008  Full Book

In January and February 2008, we distributed a voluntary four-page survey to managers and directors of mammalian reintroductions worldwide. We contacted some 200 managers in attempt to collect general information on these projects. We received 110 survey responses from numerous locations, such as Belize, Gabon, South Africa, Madagascar, USA, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Vietnam, Korea, Indonesia, and Australia. The original survey form, without automatic form fields, is included at the end of this document. The purpose of this survey was to evaluate mammalian reintroduction projects with regard to taxa, release-site status and location, and project type and status. We intended to compare projects to ultimately help position CERCOPAN's own reintroduction effort (mona monkeys and red-capped mangabeys in Nigeria; www.cercopan.org) within a broader context. Of the 110 surveys, each covers a single species. Three projects (reflected in six surveys) involve a reintroduction of one species to different sites, while 10 projects (27 surveys) involve reintroductions of two or more species to the same site. A few responses represent long-running projects that involve the reintroduction of one species to numerous sites; in these cases, questions regarding the release site were generally answered for the site where most animals were released, or for all sites when each had a similar status before and after reintroduction (i.e., protection level across sites was similar). In appreciation of respondents' participation in this study, we noted we would distribute a summary fact sheet on this survey.
