A New Record for the Bornean Bay Cat
2005  Cat News (43): 23-24

The Bornean bay cat _Catopuma badia_ is an endemic of Borneo. It is most closely related to the more widespread Asian golden cat _Catopuma temmincki_, although the two species diverged several million years ago and are thus rather distant relatives (Johnson & O'Brien 1997). The Bornean bay cat was once thought to be restricted to parts of northern and eastern Borneo (Payne et al. 1985), because the majority of museum specimens originated there. Based on village interviews and other circumstantial evidence, Meijaard (1997), however, hypothesized that its range included most of forested Borneo, including all parts Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of the island. Two recent sightings in Central Kalimantan Province (e.g., Hearn & Bricknell 2003) seem to confirm this hypothesis. Here, we report a recent encounter with this species in a timber concession in the upper Mahakam River area, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, adding further information on this species.
