Saving the Tiger:More Money or Less Power?
1997  Conservation Biology (11): 815-817

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) at the Bronx Zoo, New York, has recently released a policy analysis entitled _Saving the Tiger: a Conservation Strategy._ The conservation community needs to be aware of this report because of the influence WCS and similar international agencies have on wildlife policy formulation the world. Key recommendations of the report include law enforcement, the eviction of humans from tiger habitat, and conservation education of consumers of tiger products and local communities living near tiger habitat. A Cheaper, more effective, and, arguably, more realistic means of checking tiger poaching is the generation of local support for tiger conservation. Although the report refers to the need for generating such support, my concern is with the manner in which the WCS proposes to go about this delicate business.
