Reintroduction of Certain Mammal and Bird Species into the Gran Paradiso National Park
1973  Zoologischer Anzeiger, Leipzig (191): 1-44

Aims of the Investigation: In July 1971, the authors were requested by the Director of the Gran Paradiso National Park, in the western Alps of northern Italy, to undertake a feasibility study on the re-introduction of three mammal and two bird species that formerly occurred within the Park area or its environs but which are now extinct. The five species concerned were: roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), lynx (Felis lynx), otter (Lutra lutra), lammergeier or bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) and capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus).-The aims of the present investigation, therefore, are to: (a) outline the basic needs for re-introduction programme (b) consider the principal ecological requirements of the species under review (c) review the natural history, current management and human use of the re-introduction area and to determine if it will satisfy these animals requirements (d) propose a strategy for successful re-introduction of these species on the basis of the data presented.
