A New Conservation Strategy for the Namibian Cheetah (_Acinonyx jubatus_)
1997  Full Book

In 1995, the Republic of Namibia and Safari Club International petitioned the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to downlist the Namibian cheetah (_Acinonyx jubatus_) under the US Endangered Species Act (ESA). If this reclassification occurs, special regulations may be simultaneously promulgated allowing importation of cheetah trophies into the United States without permits. The cheetah is currently listed as an Appendix I species under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) with an export quota of 150 animals per year from Namibia. Stuart Wells, Assistant Curator at the National Zoo, commissioned the Problem Solving Team at the University of Maryland to review the potential responses of USFWS to the downlisting petition. The Problem Solving Team approached this issue from a multidisciplinary background which integrated biological, economic, and political considerations.
