Oncilla, Little Spotted Cat _Leopardus tigrinus_ (Schreiber 1775)
1975  Book Chapter

Characteristics, distribution and habits of the oncilla. Elliot, in his Monograph of the Felidae regarded the oncilla as identical with Geoffroy's cat, while Mivart treated it as a distinct species. For a long time it went under the designation Felis tigrina. Taxonomists then placed it in the subgenus Noctifelis of the genus Oncifelis, naming it Oncifelis parfimoides (Grey 1869). A few years ago, Leyhausen suggested that it might be fairly closely related to the margay, with which, incidentally, it has been confused on many occasions. Comparisons of its chromosomes with those of members of the genus Leopardus has since confirmed this view, and it is now known as Leopardus tigrinus.
