Jungle Cat, Reed Cat _Felis (Chaus) chaus_ (Gldenstaedt 1776)
1975  Book Chapter

Characteristics, distribution and habits of the jungle cat, reed cat. Two different types of felines can easily be distinguished on the wall paintings of Egyptian monuments - the African wildcat, and the considerably larger species which we know as the jungle or reed cat. Both of them played an important part in the ancient cults of the Nile Valley, and the reed cat was, in addition, trained for hunting wildfowl. Zoologists have long regarded this species as closely allied to the lynxes, and while it has now definitely been included in the genus Felis, the various points in which it differs from the wildcat and its nearest relatives have been acknowledged by its being made the sole representative of the subgenus Chaus.
