The Zanzibar Leopard is an elusive and possible extinct subspecies endemic to Unguja (Zanzibar) island. After the 1964 Zanzibar Revolution they were hunted to extinction because of a widespread belief that witches use the animals to harm their fellow villagers. Inhabitants of the rural areas still claim sightings, though non of the reports could be verified by researchers. |
