2000  Conference Proceeding

In 1983 unidentified curves bacilli, now named _Heliobacter_ pylori, was discovered in the gastric epithelium in humans with active chronic gastritis. Infection with _Heliobacter_ is now recognized as the most important cause of human gastritis and also identified as a pathogen for various other domestic, laboratory and zoo animals. The bacterium has also been demonstrated in a few species of wild birds. In wild mammals infections with _Heliobacter _spp. or _Heliobacter_ - like organisms have been demonstrated in carnivores like red foxes (_Vulpes vulpes_) and cheetah (_Acinonyx jubatus_).
