2004  Mammal Biology (69): 349-353

The bay cat was first discribed in 1874 from a specimen collected by Alfred Russell Wallace in Sarawak in 1855. Since then until 1994 this enigmatic species was known from only nine specimens held in five museums. Since the late 1990s several specimens were captured alive.
