Falser, N.
A Visitor's Experience in Primorye
  Manuscript

This is a short report about the situation in the Lazowsky nature reserve in the Russian Far East. Mrs. Ingrid Bandtlow (Medical Technician) and I were in primorye Province from 14-19 September 1992. The aim of our expedition was to take still camera pictures and video films of the Siberian tiger. During the time we were in Lazovsky Reserve, together with Mrs. Galina Salkina and her husband, scientists who have been working in this area for years, we tried for 14 nights to observe tigers from a hide by baiting with cattle and domestic pig carcasses. During this time we never got the opportunity to see a tiger, but the greater surprise was that no other predator, such as bear, fox or other carnivore touched the baits. In long discussions with our experts we decided that heavy poaching, as well as disturbance by field workers and their vehicles, were the cause of our failure.
