European lynx feeding and relationships with ungulates in the middle Ural
1984  Bjulleten' Moskovskogo Obscestva Ispytatelej Prirody / Otdel biologiceskij (89): 70-81

Different methods of studying European lynx feeding have been shown to give various results. Generalized indices of food finding are proposed to use for more accurate estimation of the predator's feeding; these indices must be based on data obtained with different methods. The mountain hare and woodland grouse predominate in the European lynx diet in the northern part of the Middle Ural, while the mountain hare and roe deer predominant in its southern part. When the mountain hare numbers are low, the European lynx does not transfer to preferential use of ungulates as its food. Analysis of cranium trauma in the European lynx was made in regions with different densities of ungulates; hunting for ungulates has been shown to entail a high risk of physical mutilation for the European lynx.
