Family Felidae (Cats)
  Book Chapter

Family Felidae (Cats) This family has proved taxonomically difficult and a number of different arrangements have been proposed (listed by Wozencraft, 1993: 288; see also Salles, 1992: 2) The arrangement adopted here follows Wozencraft (1993: 288-299). Nowell & Jackson (in press) graded the species into catogories of vulnerability on a global and regional ranking basis, 1 being the most vulnerable and 50 the least, with (A) indicating active threat from hunting pressure. Their catories are indicated under Conservation status. Subfamily Acinonychinae; There is no record of the cheetah Acinonyx jubatus (Schreber) from Ghana or (contra Phillipson, 1978: 186) from Sierra Leone, and the putative range mapped by Skinner & Smithers (1900: 395) excludes both countries. With regard to the Gambia Parker (1973, Appendix I) considered that it was ". a possible wanderer from Senegal, but unlikely to have ever been anything else in the tall grasslands of The Gambia".
