Status of larger wildlife species - cheetah, leopard and lion
  Full Book

There are three large predators in Mocambique: The lion, the leopard, and the cheetah. Cheetah have become extremely rare in the 1980s, mainly due to heavy poaching and habitat destruction by wildfires. Leopards are still abundant and well distributed in Mocambique, even though poaching by rural people occurs. Lions are not endangered as a species in Mocambique and there is no organized poaching. However, their status varies regionally and there are some provinces where they are extinct. Poaching and illegal killing to protect lifestock and people occurs. This report also provides distribution maps for all three species.
