Fagotto, F.
The lion in Somalia
1985  Mammalia (49): 587-588

A specific research for lions was carried out in 1984: all the information I report here concerning their status and distribution refers to this year. The description of the environment is limited to the southern territories of Somalia where Lions are still not rare. The Lion's habitat includes different types of plant communities typical of Southern Somalia (De Marco and Fagotto 1978): open woodlands, dense woodlands and hygrophilous savannas. The lions living in Somalia have distinct characteristics which authorizes considering them a geographical race (Panthera leo somalensis Hollister). The most important characteristic is the absence of the mane: Only a few and very short hairs are present on the sides of the neck.
