Organized crime and the illegal wildlife trade
  Full Book

This report is an account of the illicit and escalating international trade in wildlife. The information presented here was gathered during a year long investigation that took our investigators to five continents to interview conservationists and enforcement personnel while documenting the illegal activities of some of the world's biggest wildlife dealers. Endangered species are being poached and smuggled on an unprecedented scale across the globe to feed an organized and lucrative trade with increasing links to criminal syndicates. The profits from this trade enormous, and according to Interpol, annual revenues are now in excess of $5 billion. Like most police agencies, the Interpol network, which extends throughout the world and is utilized to combat drug trafficking, gun smuggling and other forms of transnational crime, has historically paid little attention to violations of international wildlife regulations. There are no global "environmental police" to call.
