Eaton, R.L.
Evolution of sociality in the Felidae
1979  Carnivore (2): 82-89

In this paper I briefly examine the four hypotheses to indicate the possible importance of each to evolution of grouping in the Felidae. Analysis of the fourth hypothesis - interspecific competition for resources - as it applies to large African carnivores (Eaton, 1979) and hominids (Eaton, in press a) appears elsewhere. Experimental studies of social behavior in the lion provide further tests of the hypothesis that grouping is favored by intraspecific competition.
