Gudynas, E.
Inventory report: _Felis pardalis_ in Uruguay
1982  Full Book

The ocelot has not been included for the Uruguayan fauna, as there is not evidence that it occurs in the country in the past. Recently, Acosta y Lara (1) found an old newspaper article ("La Prensa", 13(3913), July 31, 1901) published at Salto city, which described the hunting of Puma concolor individuals. The article signaled the presence at the Arapey river gallery forests of a cat with a "skin 'splashed' of veins and moles, and about 1,20m length". Acosta y Lara stated that it may be the ocelot. Thus it is probable that F. paralis actually occur in Uruguay in the past. Considering the ocelot's habitat selection this seems probable, as the Arapey area presents large forests by the time. Individuals may reach Uruguay, from northern forests, thanks to the forests along major rivers.
