Is there justification for subspeciation in lions Proceedings of a Symposium on Lions and Leopards as Game Ranch Animals Onderstepoort 24-25 October
1997  Conference Proceeding

When lions are hunted in South Africa it would seem obligatory that they are original Southern African lions that were born and bred in South Africa. Zoo-bred lions of unknown lineage are sometimes imported exclusively for trophy hunting. The ethnics of this practice is controversial, disreputable and probably unacceptable for the trophy hunting fraternity. The recognition of subspeciation in lions may influence the practice of breeding and hunting lions in South Africa in future.
