Threat and Conservation of Wildlife Resources in Niger Delta Region of Nigeria
2018  Conference Proceeding

The Niger Delta Region of Nigeria is renowned for its rich biodiversity and a large amount of crude oil deposit. Consequently, this has led to the increasing numbers of exploration activities couple with oil spills and other forms of habitat degradation. This review paper, therefore, seeks to examine the threat and conservation status of wildlife resources found in the region. The different ecological zones of the region and the specific wildlife resources found therein were identified. The major threat to wildlife biodiversity and causes of environmental degradation in the Niger Delta Region were human population growth and anthropogenic activities such as oil spill and exploration, urbanization, farming practice, poaching, firewood collection, uncontrolled logging, unregulated fire, dredging, deforestation, solid wastes discharge, and gas flaring. Recommendations were made on strategies to resuscitate and protect the wildlife species that are threatened.
