Prevalence of blood types A, B and AB in Neotropical Wild Felines Native to Brazil
2017  Full Book

Neotropical wild cats inhabit South and Central America, but only eight species are native to Brazil. It has been reported that wild cats have the same AB blood system as domestic cats, consisting of three types, A, B and the rarer AB. The aim of this study was to carry out blood typing on Brazilian neotropical felid species using the card test and the test tube haemagglutination test. To compare the use of these techniques and describe the prevalence of blood types A, B and AB in these species. Forty-two samples were collected from six different species of Neotropical wild cats: ten _Leopardus tigrinus_, seven_ Leopardus weidii_, eight _Leopardus pardalis_, two Puma yagouaroundi, four _Puma concolor_ and 11 _Panthera onca_. All the animals belonging to the_ Panthera_ and _Leopardus_ genera were positive for blood type A in both tests carried out. The animals belonging to the _Puma_ genus, on the other hand, were positive for type B. There were no problems typing using the card method, suggesting that it is well suited to blood typing in felids.
