Anurans in the Brazilian Pampa biome: the first checklist from Biological Reserve of SÆo Donato and a summary on actual knowledge of conservation units
2019  Herpetology Notes (12): 1095-1103

Fauna inventories are important for the knowledge of local diversity; however, most ecosystems are underestimated, which is the case of grasslands. We conducted an inventory of the anuran species from the Biological Reserve of SÆo Donato and summarized species richness along conservation units (CUs) in the Brazilian Pampa biome. This is one of the few CUs in the Brazilian Pampa, located in the southwest of Rio Grande do Sul state. We complemented the qualitative inventory with visual and auditive sampling surveys, and pitfall traps. We also searched for anuran records in scientific collections to complement the checklist. In addition, we performed an extensive literature review of published articles in academic databases to include further knowledge on the species richness. We found 19 species, distributed in five families, with confirmed occurrence in the Biological Reserve of SÆo Donato. We recorded 18 species during field activities and one species was exclusively confirmed based on scientific collection data. We recorded at least other six species in the surrounding areas. To date, only five from 31 CUs along the Brazilian Pampa (16%) have published inventories of anuran species. We hope that our findings will stimulate future studies on anuran diversity in the remaining CUs of the Brazilian Pampa biome. Finally, we highlight that the Biological Reserve of SÆo Donato is in real danger of disappearing within the next years due to a series of neglections, which have been encouraging rapid agricultural expansion on natural ecosystems.
