Big cats in a changing landscape: ecology and genetics in the upper Paran  river, Atlantic forest, Brazil
2022  Full Book

This thesis aimed to identify ecological and genetic patterns of the jaguar (Panthera onca) and the puma (Puma concolor), which support the occurrence of both species, to contribute to the maintenance of their populations in the Upper Paran  River, within the Upper Parana Atlantic Forest ecoregion, Brazil. In the study of the mammal community, including the big cats, beta diversity was evaluated considering the landscape elements in the V rzeas do Rio Ivinhema State Park, Mato Grosso do Sul and in Pontal do Paranapanema, SÆo Paulo. The second study addressed interspecific interactions between predator and prey populations in the V rzeas do Rio Ivinhema State Park, conducting activity analyses and co-occurrence occupation models. These two studies were based on camera trapping data. A third study, using biological samples of the two predator species from the Upper Paran  River, evaluated the diversity and genetic structure of the two big cats comparatively.
