Comparative study of the diet of four sympatric felines in Pampa Gaucho
2015  Anais do SalÆo Internacional de Ensino, Pesquisa e ExtensÆo (7): 1-2

Diet studies of sympatric felines are a way to find out how morphologically similar species use the resources available in a potentially competitive environment. The objective of this work is to comparatively evaluate the diet of the four species of small cats that occur in sympathies in Pampa Gaucho. The diet of_ Leopardus geoffroyi _(n=6), _Leopardus wiedii_ (n=7), _Leopardus colocolo_ (n=5) and _Puma yagouaroundi _(n=5) was analyzed based on stomachs collected from animals run over on roads in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Mammals were the most consumed item, and rodents of the family Cricetidae were the most representative, except for_ P. yagouaroundi_, who consumed only_ Cavia aperea_, showing the relationship of periods of prey and predator activity. Some items were consumed exclusively by some species, suggesting their ability to explore the availability of local resources._ L. wiedii_ and _L. colocolo _had 99% similarity in their diet, possibly reflected by their higher consumption of birds than the others. This work brings the first comparative data on the diet of sympatric feline species in Pampa Gaucho, helping to better understand the mechanisms that govern the coexistence of these species.
