Comparative analysis of conservation policies for Southamerican wild cats, case study of the puma (_Puma concolor_)
2016  Full Book

_Puma concolor_ is the most widely distributed vertebrate in America and has been recorded in a wide range of habitats and successional stages from southern Canada, the United States, Central and South America (Pacific Coast, Caribbean Coast, Andes and Amazon, to the extreme south of Chile and Argentina). The purpose of this research was to establish a comparative analysis of conservation policies of wild cats in Chile and South American countries, focusing mainly in the case of _Puma concolor_.The information collected was categorized from the widest to the most specific. Then, general information about felines was compiled and in particular about _Puma concolor_. Then based on the information collected, an interview was applied to key informants to collect their assessment about the conservation of felines. They indicate the need to allocate public and private funds to educate people to achieve greater environmental awareness, establish greater legal requirements and generate new multilateral agreements. The laws of South American countries aimed at the preservation of this carnivorous are focused on protecting certain areas (biological corridors), which indirectly generates care in their populations. However, Chile stands out since it is the only South American country with a National Conservation Plan for the Puma. Its impacts cannot yet be assessed because this plan is effective since 2009. Which still cannot be established if it has achieved an increase in the number of these mammals because the results of the before mentioned Plan are expected in the coming years.
