Conservation of biodiversity in Luki Biosphere Reserve
2017  Full Book

The wildlife biodiversity study of the Luki Biosphere Reserve contributes to the protection and conservation of the forest ecosystems of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Luki Component. The main objective of this study is to promote conservation efforts to safeguard the integrity of the Luki Biosphere Reserve's wildlife biodiversity as long as its degradation remains a continuous and perceptible process at the national and international levels. This conservation potential could be inspired by the concepts of flagship species such as Western Lowland Gorilla, Chimpanzee, and Forest Buffalo. Of course, poaching, deforestation, slash-and-burn agriculture, charring and sawing of the Luki Biosphere Reserve must be actively combated by more effective means as part of an interdisciplinary management program integrating human and environmental factors for sustainable management of its biotic resources. A participatory methodology was chosen for the execution of the work. This one was based on three different stages, namely: population survey; zoning; list of fauna encountered on ground. The element of our surveys focused on the Aboriginal population, hunters, traders, consumers and managers. This study shows the following elements. At the population level, the exploitation of biodiversity elements in the Luki Biosphere Reserve mainly concerns men living on the Boma-Matadi road. We attributed these facts to the human concentration on this road and to the level of study of this population. Despite the intensification of hunting, many traders no longer consider it profitable to trade in hunting products. In addition, the presence of aboriginals as members of the reserve management team would also discourage sellers of game meat. Our study revealed the main actors that condition in one way or another the survival and sustainability of the elements of biodiversity in the Luki Biosphere Reserve.
