Zimmermann, P.A.
Research on amyloidosis and acute phase proteins in captive and wild black-footed cats (_Felis nigripes_)
2009  Full Book

The black-footed cat is a secretive, nocturnal and solitary felid endemic to the south-west arid zone of the Southern African Subregion. In 1975 Wuppertal Zoo started keeping black-footed cats and the international studbook for this species has been compiled there since 1993. The European population of captive black-footed cats currently consists of only 6 animals after a constant decline starting in the mid-eighties of the last century (State: January 2008) A retrospective study of necropsy records of captive black-footed cats stated kidney failure as the main mortality cause in this species worldwide, approaching almost 100 % in European cats. Further analysis led to the diagnosis of generalised reactive AA-Amyloidosis in most of the cases. With the aim of a possible pre-mortem detection of AA-Amyloidosis, evaluations of _in vivo _diagnostic tools were performed. Subcutaneous fat and colon biopsies were taken from sedated cats and prepared in order to detect deposits of amyloid.
