Study of anthropogenic influence on carnivorous mammal populations in Osona
2020  Full Book

Mesocarnivores are key species for the ecosystems' equilibrium, and at the same time they are one of the most affected groups by the increase of human population and urbanization, either by the direct persecution or by the loss and fragmentation of their habitats. In order to study the influence of urbanization on medium-sized carnivorous populations in Osona (Central Catalonia), 44 cameras traps were installed in 7 representative areas of the region in terms of landscape and urbanization. Carnivore detections were used to calculate total richness, diversity index, total abundance index and abundance index of each specie in each study area and to relate them with urbanization, calculated from the percentage of urban cover and the distance to the nearest village. The results have shown a negative influence of urbanization on total richness and abundance of mesocarnivores, while they have not shown a significant relationship with the diversity. Fox (_Vulpes vulpes_), stone marten (_Martes foina_), pine marten (_Martes martes_) and wild cat (_Felis silvestris_) have significantly negative relationships towards urbanization, being pine marten and wild cat the least tolerant species. In contrast, common genet (_Genetta genetta_) and Eurasian badger (_Meles meles_) are not influenced by human pressure.
