Biodiversity survey of the Founders Lodge, Lapalala Wilderness, Limpopo Province
2016  Full Book

Lapalala Wilderness is a private game reserve situated between Modimolle and Lephalale in west-central Limpopo Province. The reserve is approximately 36 000 hectares in size and is currently being developed into shareholder blocks. The Founders Lodge development, situated in the south-central part of the reserve, consists of a network of roads, four guest tents, four staff tents, the main lodge building, workshop / generator room and water tanks. All the tents have been constructed on elevated decks and are linked to the lodge by an elevated walkway. The total area under development is approximately 2 hectares but this was expanded to 4.8 hectares after fieldwork was completed. ECOREX Consulting Ecologists CC was initially appointed by Peter Velcich of NuLeaf Planning & Environmental to conduct the terrestrial ecology study for a Basic Assessment Report (BAR), which would have provided a basis for assessing potential impacts of the project on terrestrial ecology and guide the design and location of additional planned infrastructure. This was changed to a Section 24 (g) application mid-project (Applications for rectification of unlawful commencement or continuation of listed activities under NEMA) as the developers had already almost completed their planned infrastructure. This study will therefore focus on the specific impacts relating to the existing development as well as anticipated impacts relating to the completion of the project (an additional eight chalets and managers house). The study comprised flora and vertebrate fauna (mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs). The two key deliverables were a baseline terrestrial ecology survey and an integrated Biodiversity Value Assessment. Limited consultation with local landowners and interested parties took place in the preparation of this specialist report, including reserve manager and shareholder Anton Walker and lodge manager Neil Davison.
