The impacts of anthropic action on wild fauna individuals from Caxias do Sul region: an ex situ approach
2019  Revista Brasileiras de Biociencias (17): 14-24

The number of wild fauna individuals coming in contact with urban environment has been increasing due to the growing exploitation of natural resources and ongoing expansion of cities, both of which often result in the occurrence of accidents and/or conflicts and may even lead to the local extinction of animal species. We aimed to investigate the impacts of direct anthropic action on birds and mammals from the wild fauna of Caxias do Sul municipality region. The study was performed using data from a 10- year survey (2007 through 2016) conducted at the Caxias do Sul University zoo. The analyzed data revealed that the number of affected birds was higher than the number of affected mammals. The most frequent occurrences were wildlife capture, run overs, rescue of animals from illegal captivities and wounds due to gun fire. We also found that the number of reintroductions into the wild after check-in in the zoo was higher than the number of deaths. Therefore, our study evidenced the need for and importance of raising awareness of the effects of anthropic actions on wildlife, as well as of the relevance of zoos and centers for animal care and rehabilitation for the ecosystem and society as a whole.
