Biodiversity baseline survey: Mount K adventure resort, Madampe - Rathnapura
2019  Full Book

This biodiversity survey was carried out at Mount K Adventure Resort, Madampe-Rathnapura to assess the biodiversity associated with different habitat types. Hence, permitting to identify ecological sensitive areas within the study site. Detailed observations on habitats and species were made during field studies conducted in April 2019. A total of four major habitats types in the study site were observed based on physical conditions and vegetation types. These are forests, cultivations, catchments and home gardens. The area had been extensively used for tea cultivations thereon presence of secondary forests is very little. There were few remained secondary forest patches adjacent to the Resort. Two important water catchments were observed within the Resort that maintain significant contribution to supply of water to surrounded area. Since the survey site is located in wet zone of the country, the species abundance, endemism and the diversity are observed to be higher. A total of 95 species of vertebrates and 14 species of butterflies were recorded from the survey area. 91 floral species recorded under 46 families. 15 endemic vertebrates were recorded in the site including 12 Nationally Threatened species and 2 Nationally Endangered species. Clearance of natural habitats for cultivation, spreading of invasive species, encroachment, soil erosion due to improperly managed land and poaching are the major conservation issues in the study area. Based on the field observations, set of recommendations were also documented on this report to fulfill the conservation of biodiversity in Mount K Adventure Resort.
