2014  Full Book

Diet of _Leopardus colocolo _was characterized in Reserva Nacional Junin and its surroundings, in the center of Peru, based on the analysis of 43 feces, which were collected from August 2005 to July 2006 and identified by analyzing DNA samples collected from intestinal epithelial cells existing on its surface. For data analysis, the frequency of occurrence and relative biomass of food items were used as estimators and the values were expressed in percentage. In addition, the trophic niche breadth was estimated and described some other aspects of your eating habits. 14 food items belong to mammals of Cricetidae (6), Chinchillidae (1) and Caviidae (1) families, birds of Anatidae (3) and Rallidae (2) families and one group of unidentified birds were identified in the diet of _L_. _colocolo_. The results showed that _L_. _colocolo _feeds mainly of rodents and secondary of birds, in frequency and biomass. Among the food items identified, the small rodent _Calomys _sp. constitute the main contribution to the diet in frequency, but the largest contribution in biomass came from medium rodent _Cavia tschudii_. The niche breadth analysis showed a narrow trophic niche consisting exclusively by vertebrates, especially cricetid rodents. Seasonal analysis of the diet of _L_. _colocolo _showed no significant differences.
