Seidensticker, J.
Managing tigers in the Sundarbans: experience and opportunity
1986  Conference Proceeding

It is not in the economic cards to set the Sundarbans or significant portion of it aside where tigers can live apart from man. I propose that the entire Sundarbans, India and Bangladesh, be designated the Sundarbans International Wildlife Refuge. So there is no confusion, I am not proposing that India or Bangladesh give up any management control of their forests or that an International body manage the Sundarbans. What I am proposing is a way to emphasize and include the ecologic, demographic, and genetic needs of a tiger population and those of other wildlife species into the forest management systems of both countries. This proposal seeks to provide a mechanism to refine management capabilities to include all components of the Sundarbans ecosystem that contribute to the protection of vital ecosystem function. Wildlife management and forest management activities should have a synergistic effect towards achieving a management goal of best achievable ecosystem function. In this context, an increased investment in wildlife management will be cost effective by contributing to additional management capability for the entire Sundarbans land management system.
