10 day large mammal and habitat assessment in Western Pursat Province, Cambodia
2000  Full Book

The following is a report on a portion of an ongoing survey of the Cardamom Mountains in western Cambodia that I took part in during the months of January and February 2000. The part of the survey that I was involved with can be separated into three general areas: the wide Pouthisat river basin (extending from east of Toul Krous village to the mountain escarpments in the west), the slopes and high elevation (>1000m) plateau of the Tumpoh mountain complex, and an foothill region of the central cardamoms to the east of Tuol Krous. Our surveys in all areas consisted primarily of walking dirt roads or animal trails noting general habitat observations, direct observations of animals, indirect sign, and materials in local villages. This information was augmented and contextualized through interviews with local residents (many hunters and former guerilla soldiers), officers of the Wildlife Protection Office (WPO), and officers of the Ministry of Environment (MOE). Further details on survey methodology can be found in the final survey report due out in October 2000.
