II. Conflictos entre felinos y humanos en Am‚rica Latina
2016  Full Book

_"Conflictos entre felinos y humanos en Am‚rica Latina"_ (Human - Wild Cat Conflict in Latin America) is the second volume of the Neotropical Fauna Series published by the Biodiversity Science Program of the Alexander von Humboldt Biological Resources Research Institute (IAvH). This volume combines leading editorial work from Panthera and _Fundaci¢n Herencia Ambiental Caribe_. It includes the contribution of 77 institutions and 110 authors from 18 different countries in 32 chapters focusing on human - wild cat conflicts throughout Latin America spanning multiple angles including three major themes: conflict characterization, management and the human dimension. The first section of the book begins with a historical assessment of human and wild cat relations since the first bipedal hominids, three million years ago, until present day; followed by six case studies from Colombia, M‚xico and Panam . The second section of the book examines conflict management by presenting nine case studies from Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panam , Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela and Arizona (U.S.A) where several anti-predatory strategies have been developed and field tested. Within the case studies anti-predatory strategies are described including the use electrical and night enclosures, establishment of calving paddocks, adopting pizza or wagon wheel pasture system, use of bells, LED lights, and human patrols with fireworks in order to scare predators away. The third section of the book assesses an upcoming investigation field where wildlife, in this particular case conflict, is analyzed within human dimensions in order to describe, understand, predict and change human perceptions as well as actions towards nature within a socioeconomic approach. Case studies in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Per£ are focused upon three components: harming wildlife (i.e. retaliatory hunting), crops or people (i.e. threats); the persecution and hunting of problem animals and disputes among parties concerning actions that must be taken in response to human - wildlife conflict.
