First International Small Wild Cat Conservation Summit
2018  Conference Proceeding

Small wild cats are special and require special conservation approaches. Conservation strategies do not yet exist for the majority of the 34 Felinae species. Iberian Lynx _Lynx pardinus_, European Lynx _L. lynx_, Cheetah _Acinonyx jubatus_, Andean Cat _Leopardus jacobita _and Fishing Cat _Prionailurus viverrinus _are the only ones, for which international conservation strategies have been developed (Delibes et al. 2000; Breitenmoser et al. 2000; Bartels et al. 2002; Andean Cat Alliance 2011; Appel and Duckworth 2015). There is still a dearth of people with expertise in research and conservation of small wild cats, but the number of motivated people is growing, albeit slowly. This trend needs to be promoted and expanded to safeguard the diversity of small wild cat species across range countries and habitats. At the same time, commitment from national and international stakeholders needs to increase. No established platform exists for sharing information, promoting representation at international fora, coordinating and networking to promote and optimize conservation efforts. The idea of organizing the First International Small Wild Cat Conservation Summit was conceived against this background. The meeting provided an opportunity for participants to exchange and discuss challenges and experiences gained in small wild cat conservation projects. During the first 2.5 days of the meeting, i.e. from 11 to 13 September, participants presented their efforts in research and conservation projects dedicated to small wild cats. The afternoon of 13 September was used for workshop sessions. Participants formed small groups and received workshop material such as cards, marker pens and large sheets of paper. They garnered ideas on the themes communication, conservation and research, organisation, and funding.
