Struggling in the stronghold? - Leopards in the African rainforest

The prevailing image of the leopard as a secretive yet adaptable species emanates from savanna habitats where this versatile cat has fared considerably better than other large carnivores. The general assumption is that for the forest leopards of Central and West Africa, the situation is no different - indeed it is widely believed that here leopards occur in even greater numbers. Not necessarily, says Philipp Henschel, the director of WCS's Forest Leopard Study in Gabon.
