The Urban Caracal Project: examining the effects of human activities on caracals _Caracal caracal_ in an isolated peninsula
2018  Conference Proceeding

As the urban-wildland interface expands, natural populations are increasingly threatened by human activities. Roads, vehicular traffic, and urban infrastructure fragment habitat, increase mortality, inhibit gene flow, and alter behavior. Nonnative species increase disease exposure for native wildlife, which can lead to population declines. Exposure to toxicants can manifest through impaired reproduction, immunity, and survival. Mitigating these threats is essential to conserving species as urban areas expand. To investigate the behavioral and genetic effects of urbanization on a free-ranging species, we studied populations of Caracal _Caracal caracal_ across a gradient of urbanization in and around Cape Town, South Africa.
