Jungle cat and rusty-spotted cat conservation in Sri Lanka

The Jungle Cat _Felis chaus_ and Rusty-spotted Cat _Prionailurus rubiginosus_ are two of the three small wild cat species found in Sri Lanka. Both species are listed in the Fauna and Flora Protection (Amendment) Act, No. 22 of 2009 under Schedule ll (Parliament of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka 2009), and in the National Red List of 2012 (MOE 2012). The Jungle Cat is classified as Near Threatened and the Rusty-spotted Cat as Endangered. Globally, the Jungle Cat and Rusty-spotted Cat are classified as Least Concern and Near Threatened respectively, on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (Gray et al. 2016; Mukherjee et al. 2016).
