Vaqueiros do S¡tio do Meio (Lagoa Grande/PE) e mam¡feros nativos das Caatingas Pernambucanas: percep‡äes e intera‡äes
2007  Full Book

This research aimed at analysing the perception and interaction of the herdsmen community of S¡tio do Meio, district of Barra Bonita, municipality of Lagoa Grande, located in the DepressÆo Sertaneja of Pernambuco, in relation to native mammalian fauna. For this, mammalian surveys were conducted in the area, in two field trips: one in the dry season and one during the wet season (July and September 2004). Towards the ethnobiological approach, data were collected in three field trips (July/September 2004 and December 2006), through semi-structured interviews and plates depicting local mammalian fauna, which aided species identification. A total of 28 mammalian species were recorded in the area. The interviewed population ('sertanejos') expressed vast biological, organisational and utilitarian knowledge of native species. In particular, species' behavioural and dietary information were described in a very comprehensible manner by most of the respondents, indicating the deep knowledge of the herdmen of S¡tio do Meio about the local mammalian fauna. Regarding the losses that mammals can cause to cattle and subsistence crops, mammals are locally perceived as "malinos" ('evil') and "nÆo-malinos" ('non-evil'). The interactions between these two communities revolve around cattle-cougar-herdsman conflicts and the invasion of plantations by animals; subsistence hunting; medicinal and spiritual use of mammal products and parts; and the rearing and management of wild species by local inhabitants. As a result of some of these interactions, some native mammalian species are already locally extinct or declining towards extinction. Among those are the cougar (_Puma concolor_), the jaguar (_Panthera onca_), the Brazilian three-banded armadillo (_Tolypeutes trincinctus_), and the white-lipped peccary (_Tayassu pecari_). Some strategies already in use by the local population, if encouraged, may act in an effective way towards the conservation of mammalian species still found in the area.
