Retracing the history of the Ngorongoro lions
1987  Swara (10): 30-31

The present-day population of lions in the Ngorognoro Crater could all be descended from a group of only 6-15 lions. Anyone who has photos of lions taken in Ngorognoro during the 1960s might be able to help researchers establish if this is indeed the case - and consequently if the lions have been subject to the harmful effects of excessive inbreeding.
