A preliminary study of the population and ecology of Javan leopard in savanna ecosystem in Baluran National Park
2016  Conference Proceeding

Javan leopard (_Panthera pardus melas_) is one of 9 subspecies of leopard. After the Javan tiger went extinct in the 1970s it is the largest predator on Java and genetically distinct from the mainland Asia form Due to a combination of poaching, habitat loss and retaliation killing the population has declined to less than 250 individuals remaining in the wild, and it is listed as Critically Endangered by IUCN Redlist. With its unique savannah ecosystem, Baluran National Park is one of the most important remaining habitats for the Javan leopard. Despite its small size (25,000ha), Baluran is home to a high density of prey-species, such as sambar deer, banteng, water buffalo, green peacock, long-tailed macaque, Javan langur and muntjak. Copenhagen Zoo and Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Indonesia conducted an extensive camera trapping survey for Javan leopard, using 90 cameras for a period of 120 days. This provides the first comprehensive ecological study concerning Javan leopards in savannah ecosystem in Baluran Naitonal Park, and the results will contribute to developing effective future conservation and management plans.
