Detection and abundance of the flat-headed cat (_Prionailurus planiceps_) in different forest types in Malaysia
2016  Conference Proceeding

The flat-headed cat (_Prionailurus planiceps_) is listed as Endangered by IUCN Red List. Few reliable sources are available on the species' historical or current distribution, and even less is known about its ecology and behaviour in the wild. In Peninsular Malaysia Flat-headed cats have been recorded from peat and mangrove swamps, and marshy or wet areas within lowland dipterocarp forests where there's presumably a good prey base. The study was carried out in the dipterocarp forests of the Krau Wildlife Reserve (April 2013 - September 2014) and the peat swamp forests in the Tasek Bera Ramsar Site (April - July 2014). Objectives were to detect and compare the abundance of Flat-headed cats in both study areas, and gain insights into their ecology. A total of 20 camera traps were deployed for 8600 trap nights at Krau and 2006 trap nights at Tasek Bera. Very few cats were recorded at either site. Six independent (1hour) pictures were recorded in Krau, while only two independent pictures were recorded at Tasek Bera. Detections were made during both the wetter and drier times of the year, with cats being active during both day and night. Comparisons between detection rates, habitats and camera placements will be discussed.
