The subspecies question
1991  Cat News/IUCN SSC: 17 -18

Concern about the problem of defining felid subspecies and genetic differences between populations has recently arisen from several quarters. There is controversy over the introduction of Kenya lions to a private reserve in Botswana: Florida panthers have been found to have genes from other puma subspecies; priorities are needed for conservation of threatened wild populations; the captive breeding community is discussing the matter in the light of its future programmes: and the issue is of importance for implementation of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Here are some informal comments received from leading taxonomists.
