The Pampas Cat Group (Genus Lynchailurus Servertzov, 1858) (Carnivora, Felidae), a Systematic and Biogeographic Review
1994  American Museum Novitates: 1-36

A systematic study of 86 specimens of South American cats formerly known as _Felis colocolo_ reveals three species, in addition to a new subspecies described herein. The three species are grouped in the genus _Lynchailurus_ on the basis of shared character states. _Lynchailurus pajeros_ occurs on high-elevation steppes from Ecuador to Bolivia and Argentina (eastern slope of the Andes), and farther south in Argentina into lowland steppe, shrubland, and dry forest habitats. Its southern limit is Patagonia (Argentinean and Chilean). _Lynchailurus braccatus_ is found in Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, where it occupies humid and warmer grassland and forested areas, at moderate elevations. _Lynchailurus colocolo_ occurs in subtropical forests at middle elevations in central Chile, and in high-elevation steppes in northern Chile on the western slope of the Andes. The latter species may be endangered, because its distribution is limited. Assigned subspecies are as follows: _L. pajeros budini_ and _L. p. crespoi_, in northwestern Argentina; _L. p. crucinus_, in southern Argentina and Chile; _L. p. garlepp_i, in Peru; _L. p. pajeros_, in central Argentina; _L. p. steinbachi_, in Bolivia; _L. p. thomasi_, from Ecuador; _L. braccatus braccatus_, in southwestern Brazil and Paraguay; _L. b. munoa_i, in Uruguay and southern Brazil;_ L. colocolo colocolo_, in central Chile; and _L. c. wolffsohni_ (new subspecies), in northern Chile.
